What is a virtual assistant? A primer for small brands.

Welcome to part 1 of my new blog series, Virtual Assistants: A primer for small brands!
In this blog series I’ll be answering your virtual assistant related questions. You'll learn about the work virtual assistants do for small brands. You'll also learn what to expect when you work with a VA for the first time.
For today’s part 1 we’ll discuss the basic question:

What is a virtual assistant?

A virtual assistant is an independent contractor that works with businesses to complete administrative work at a distance. VAs work with different brands at any given time and can work part time or full time on flexible schedules.
By working with a VA, clients are able to spend less time on repetitive administrative work.

Virtual assistants tend to work from home offices or coworking spaces. They use high speed internet services to access work as needed by their clients.

A virtual assistant can do any work a business needs done on a computer. VAs work with anyone from small businesses to huge corporations. This means a virtual assistant can help you do a LOT of work in many different areas. That said, VAs tend to choose areas of expertise along with the general services they provide.

Examples of common work VAs can do:

  • social media management
  • blog management
  • content creation (for social media, blogs, videos etc.)
  • customer service (via chat or email)
  • e-commerce inventory management
  • website creation/management
  • lead generation
  • web research
  • podcast/video editing
  • email management
  • marketing
  • client follow-up/orientation
  • schedule management
  • travel arrangements
  • basic accounting
  • lots more!

Some virtual assistants focus all their energy into social media strategy and planning. In fact, these VAs may not identify as virtual assistants at all. They may call themselves social media managers or social media specialists.

Other VAs will focus on a specific industry, like a medical VA who only works with medical offices. There are still others who only work with businesses based on location and language.

It’s a whole wide world of different kinds of virtual assistants.

Virtual assistants exist in all kinds of combinations with different areas of expertise. There's a VA for every business and every task!

As a virtual assistant, I focus on services for handmade artisan brands based in Puerto Rico. My area of expertise is strategy and planning. I help small brands establish strong roots and become more efficient and effective. I work with clients to either do admin work on their behalf, or teach them how to create better work strategies.

Vanessa Jiménez is a virtual assistant that helps creative women across the U.S build and run handmade businesses on solid foundations. She lives and works in Puerto Rico.
