Today on our blog I’m sharing the story of a skin care brand that was born from the love of a mother for her child and flourished into the natural skin care line it is today. Let’s welcome Keyla from K & D Handcrafted Soaps!
Please, tell us a little about yourself and what you do.
My name is Keyla Berrios Davila, owner of Jabones Artesanales K & D. I work a complete skin care line with 100% natural ingredients and handmade products. I am an artisan certified by Fomento and a teacher by profession. I live in Juana Diaz but I am a native of San Lorenzo and I am a lover of all arts and coffee.
When and why did you decide to start your own business?
In 2016 I took my first workshop on medicinal glycerin soap making because my youngest son had severe dermatitis in his arms, and natural products helped get it under control. I thought that I could make these soaps myself and help him, then my husband encouraged me to upload some pictures of the soaps online and in this way all my friends began to order soaps from me. We created the Fanpage with the first letters of our names: Keyla K and Danny D (my husband). Everything was a success, my son’s skin was healthy and we began to receive many positive testimonials from many clients, which motivated us to continue expanding into more products: lotions, lip balms, oils, face masks, and scrubs.
Since you started to own your own business, what is the biggest challenge you have faced?
The biggest challenge I have had to face has been with myself. Working with discouragement and various negative thoughts that arise for some reason or other, such as organizing my family schedule, my work and production time.
What is the philosophy behind your products and what inspires you?
My philosophy is aimed at creating awareness of the use of 100% natural products vs commercial products which damage our skin and the environment with so many chemicals. I was inspired by my own experience with the positive results on my son’s skin when using natural products.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to start their own business selling handmade products?
My greatest advice for those who want to start their own business, whether it is handmade or not, is that they love what they do. First is to be sure that they are passionate about this business, that they educate themselves, take workshops and seminars to strengthen knowledge. That they organize their short and long term goals well and finally, fight and work hard to reach those goals.
What do you see in the future for your business? Where would you like your business to go?
Recently, we opened an online store with our entire line of handmade products and added distributor products with an eco-friendly approach made in bamboo, in this way we want to reach a market outside the island. This is the future I see for my business, to be able to impact a market inside and outside the country.
